WELCOME TO THE PROPERTY

This project aimed to take an intellectual property and redesign it in an alternative style. In an ironic word play, I chose to cover the band Waterparks’ album Intellectual Property with a dark fantasy twist. This concept record explores themes of religious guilt and its effects on relationships, self-esteem, sexuality, and overall mental well-being. The metaphysical manifestation of this album takes place in what is referred to as THE PROPERTY, a world where our main character, Knight, hopes to leave these principles and feelings behind so that he might find peace outside of their expectations without losing his morals or attempting to seek justice. As Knight delves further into THE PROPERTY, we realize that it’s a sort of limbo or purgatory that becomes more warped and convoluted the deeper you get, leaving us to never fully know whether he escapes or not. This scene of my adaptation illustrates a palace where Knight might begin to unlearn and leave behind the ideals that had entrapped him in fear and shame, while the chaos and peril that surrounds the castle and glows from within reflect the complex emotional turmoil of his efforts.
